Chanukkah

Guidelines

On weekdays, the candles may be lit after dark. In general the earlier the candles are lit, the better (because it exhibits an eagerness to do the mitzvah), but the candles must burn 30 minutes after sunset. Thus, the best time is right around sunset. On Friday night, light the Chanukkah candles separately before the Shabbat candles. On Saturday night, light the Chanukkah candles after Havdalah, i.e. after Shabbat is over.

On all nights, say the first two blessings. On the first night include shehecheyanu.

Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ho-olom A-sher Ki-de-sha-nu Be-mitz-vo-sov Ve-tzi-vo-nu Le-had-lik Ner Chanukkah.

Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Chanukkah.

Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ho-olom She-o-sah Ni-sim La-avo-sei-nu Ba-yo-mim Ha-hem Biz-man Ha-zeh.

Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who wrought miracles for our fathers in days of old, at this season.

Say also Shehecheyonu on the first night

Bo-ruch A-toh Ado-noi E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ho-olom She-heh-che-yoh-nu Vi-ki-ye-moh-nu Ve-he-gee-oh-nu Liz-man Ha-zeh.

Blessed are you, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has kept us alive and sustained us and let us reach this time.

On the second day of festivals the candles must be lit from a pre-existing flame after nightfall (dark).
